Sri Lankan Navy battles Sea Tigers (LTTE)
Sri Lankan Navy and terrorist from the Tamil Sea Tigers (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) have faced another in a fierce sea battle off the coast of Sri Lanka’s northern Jaffna peninsula south off Delft island on December 23, 2007.
According to Military Spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara the sea battle started around 11:00 a.m. (0530 GMT) when 12 naval fast attack crafts (FACs type Dvoras) intercepted a Sea Tiger flotilla, composed of 16 boats, trying to smuggle arms into the country.
The sea battle lasted for four hours claiming the lives of at least 40 Tamil Tiger terrorists and one naval officers. At this time, 10 sailors are still missing. According to the Sri Lankan Navy, it destroyed at least nine LTTE Sea Tiger boats while loosing one of its own when two LTTE suicide boats of the LTTE black sea tiger ramped one of the FACs. The Sri Lanken Navy called upon the Air Force in order to win this sea battle against the LTTE.
