US military ship fires on approaching boat in the Suez Canal
The MV Global Patriot, a US military ship about to cross the Suez Canal opened fire Monday (March 24, 2008) on barges that approached their boat. According to a security source the US. Sailors told the barges to stop and opened fire when they continued to approach, killing one Egyptian and wounding two others.
According to a local source, it is common for Egyptian hawkers to approach ships in he channel to sell their merchandise. After the incident several of the hawkers gathered in protest but later dispersed.
According to the website of the US Navy’s Military Sealift Command, the MV Global Patriot is a roll-on roll-off transport ship chartered from Global Container Lines. The MV Global Patriot is scheduled to cross the Suez Canal as planned at 03:00GMT today (Tuesday, March 25, 2008).
