Each day there seems to be new reports of piracy near the coast of Somalia. The pirates have learned over time that a hostile takeover of an unwitting crew and cargo is big business. With each successful attack, they get their prize – ransom.

Singapore commissioned today, February 5, 2007, three Formidable Class Stealth Frigates the RSS Intrepid, RSS Steadfast and RSS Tenacious. The frigates, having completed their sea trials and operational training will join their sister ship RSS Formidable. The home port of the frigates is Changi Naval Base (CNB).

Frensh Navy to provide piracy protection for ships calling Somalia

A new security plan has been introduced to curb the piracy problem off Somalia. The French Navy took over the responsibility of escorting ships contracted by World Food Programme (WFP) to deliver relief supplies from the port of Mombasa, Kenya to Somalia. Some 80% of WFP’s food assistance for Somalia is transported by sea.
